It will come as no surprise to hear that the garden antiques scene is not really a place where trends apply. However, there are certain items that are ever popular and collectable. One notable example is the Coalbrookdale bench, made from cast iron at the Coalbrookdale foundry in Shropshire, and enjoying its heyday in the Victorian era.
Michael Thompson, who runs Thompson’s Garden Emporium, is a Coalbrookdale bench specialist (a dealer, restorer and passionate collector). Their desirability, he explains, is down to the quality, both in terms of the manufacturing process but also the designs — the most famous of which is the Convolvulus pattern of twisting vines, first registered in 1842. The designs were first produced in wood, pressed into sand to make a mould, before molten iron was poured in. If you look closely at the back of an original Coalbrookdale bench, you’ll see that it is actually quite thin and beautifully crafted, says Thompson. So antique hunters beware: “The modern reproductions are a lot heavier than the original Coalbrookdales so it’s a bit of a myth when people say ‘that’s heavy, it must be a Victorian one’, because it’s actually the other way around.”
Thompson says that Queen Victoria purchased Coalbrookdale benches for Osborne, her home on the Isle of Wight. They were, and still are, expensive. To buy an original, says Thompson, will cost from £3,000 and could escalate to £12,000 depending on desirability, so it’s an investment piece. But they have stood the test of time and should continue to do so if looked after and restored when needed.
Of course, if your house and garden predates the Victorian era, an 18th-century bench might be more in keeping. Unlike the Coalbrookdale benches that were produced in a large foundry, these were made as one-offs, often by estate blacksmiths. They tend to be simpler in design than the later Victorian models, with little turned-out feet to stop them sinking into the earth. Demand has been huge. “As soon as they [the table sets] go online they’ve been selling out. We can’t keep up with it.”
Most antique garden furniture does show its age through patina and imperfections, but if you would rather ensure that the end aesthetic is less shabby chic and more contemporary chic, architecture and interior design practice De Rosee Sa has just launched a new collection of restored garden pieces, with a sleek and modern finish.

She said in the video: "You must bring that rug underneath your furniture. And at the very least, you need to be putting the rug underneath the front legs of your sofa and beyond, if you can."
"Rugs are expensive, we want to make sure we get it right. I always recommend masking up your floor area, putting your furniture all in its space and decide whether or not your rug is framing the space enough," she added.

Queen Creek, a hot spot for new homes, saw a 13% jump in year-to-date new listings and a reasonably steady 83 days on the market, among the highest turnover times among the major Valley cities. The median price grew to $645,000, up 10.7% in year-to-date data compared to 2023.
The number of new listings continued to climb in May in year-to-date comparisons, according to the latest data from Phoenix REALTORS. The first five months in 2024 were up more than 17% compared to the same period of 2023.
Homes have also sold faster so far this year when compared to 2023, and the average days on the market dropped from 74 to 64. The year-to-date median sale price increased 6.4% to $479,000, with home sales closing at around 98% of the asking price, a steady position over the past 12 months.
“Frankly speaking, expectations for this year were that 2024 would be better than 2023,” said Sheryl Bowden, president of Phoenix REALTORS. “Instead, we’ve faced a tight inventory for buyers who were looking. And while sales have not been what was expected so far this year, it’s heartening to see new listings increased in May, opening more ownership opportunities.”
New listings are approaching 37,000 homes on the market, comparing 2024 with the same months last year. Looking at year-over-year data, 7,121 homes were added as new listings this year compared with 6,215 in May 2023, an increase of 17.2%.
“Looking at the Valley as a whole, the data is encouraging,” Bowden said. “Individual cities are showing diverse results.”
In Phoenix, listings for the first five months of 2024 grew 18% over last year, but pending sales dropped almost 15%. The median sales price increased 12.6% to $490,000. The number of days on the market through the end of May fell from 68 to 54, down 20.6%.

“The Northwest Valley is seeing a lot of activity generated by the workers looking to live near the new semiconductor manufacturing and support facilities in Deer Valley,” Bowden said. “While Phoenix is seeing increased development in the area of TSMC and its supporting companies, Peoria and Surprise have inventory coming onto the market now.”
A 29% increase in new listings means Peoria had one of the most extensive listing jumps in year-to-date data for 2024 over 2023. While closed sales were down across the Valley in the first five months of 2024, they were down just 2.9% in Peoria. The median home price increased by 7% to $535,000.
“Interest rates continue to drop, encouraging homeowners to list properties for sale,” said Bowden. “While many buyers are just accepting rates, as they come down, more buyers should be able to qualify for mortgages.”

The awards dinner was held at Arden Park Best Western Hotel in Stratford, Ont.
Thirteen CFBA Building Awards were presented across 10 building categories. Submissions were assessed by a panel of judges on a set of scoring criteria and awarded gold, silver or bronze.
Winners were determined through a ranked ballot voted on by CFBA members at the association’s conference.
The top-ranking members choice project received the Glen White Project of the Year Award. This year, an 11-stall mare barn won the top prize. A timber wedding venue and a livestock barn each won a Members Choice Award.

Oversized glass water jug: For an oversized water jug, she selects bright yellow Blooming Forsythia, which brings a splash of vibrant color to any space. “This setup perfectly captures the essence of spring's lively renewal,” Babic says. “The contrast between the delicate, golden flowers and the simple elegance of the glass jug creates a stunning centerpiece that's both fresh and timelessly beautiful.”
Flower frogs: While beautiful, flower frogs can be problematic. The size constraints make choosing flowers more of a chore than a joy. No one wants to play roulette with stem sizes — but what is always guaranteed to fit the job?
“I picked pink Scabiosa and white Nigella (Love-in-a-Mist) to arrange in a simple crystal vase that holds just eight stems. These charming flowers, symbolizing love and delicate beauty, perfectly complement the vase, adding a touch of whimsy without stealing the spotlight from its artistic elegance,” Babic notes.
An all-too-often-made mistake is to always go with bloomed flowers. Greenery, seed pods and more delicate flowers are oftentimes overlooked, but clearly make a statement nonetheless.
Champagne bucket: “I chose to arrange Orange Buddleia Globosa, Nigella (Love-in-a-Mist), and Solomio Dianthus in a vintage silver champagne bucket to capture a whimsical French country vibe. These flowers bring a burst of vibrant color, delicate beauty, and timeless charm,” she says.
“While creating this arrangement, I imagined myself prepping for an intimate French countryside dinner, ready to host my dearest family and friends. It's like taking a joyful stroll through a blooming meadow, gathering flowers to create a centerpiece that's both casual and sophisticated that lets your creative imagination run wild.”
Julep cup: Being in Texas and not Kentucky, locals have little call for the use of a delicate julep cup. The beauty of these small treasures is that they can be very universal: nightstands, powder baths, anywhere a delicate arrangement will be appreciated, yet unintrusive.
“I chose pink Chrysanthemums, symbolizing joy and cheerfulness, and white Solomio Dianthus, representing pure love and grace, to place in a small Wedgwood cup,” the florist says. “These flowers add a lovely burst of color and elegance, making it easy to beautify any space.”
Who knows? Maybe arranging DIY bridal florals will lead to new passions and opportunities, as it did for Babic.
