How to choose antique garden furniture, from Roman to wrought-iron

On weekends from now until September, you’ll often find me wandering around a National Garden Scheme open garden, wondering why everyone else seems to be better at weeding, and desperately trying to identify plants I want. But also wishing that I had the budget for the antiques that some of the best gardens feature: because nothing seems to ground a garden quite like a wrought-iron gate or a painted bench, perfectly parked at the end of an avenue of trees.

The world of antiques — particularly for the garden — can sometimes appear hard to navigate. Where do people begin? That depends on the style of your house and garden, explains Travers Nettleton, who runs Garden Art Plus, a two-acre site in Hungerford, Berkshire, full of garden antiques from early Roman pieces to tiered fountains and Victorian benches. “I’d start with something to sit on and something to eat at. We have clients coming to us and saying, ‘We’ve just bought a beautiful Georgian house — what would be in keeping?’”

“I’d start with some beautiful Georgian strapwork metal benches, produced by high-quality blacksmiths. And then, if you are a purist, 18th-century statues and urns and planters.”

Such items not only look beautiful, they also help to create a sense of history or tell a story about our homes. “Sculpture and architectural antiques have always been used through the centuries to draw your eye to a different part of the garden,” says Nettleton. And clever placement of the items can make a big difference: “It can introduce harmony and peace as well as help the gardener draw the person around the garden.”

Gates, for example, can frame a view — Nettleton recently took a huge, 3-metre-high pair of blacksmith-worked gates to display at Chelsea Flower Show. “People like putting gates up even if they don’t own the land beyond it,” he says.

It will come as no surprise to hear that the garden antiques scene is not really a place where trends apply. However, there are certain items that are ever popular and collectable. One notable example is the Coalbrookdale bench, made from cast iron at the Coalbrookdale foundry in Shropshire, and enjoying its heyday in the Victorian era.

Michael Thompson, who runs Thompson’s Garden Emporium, is a Coalbrookdale bench specialist (a dealer, restorer and passionate collector). Their desirability, he explains, is down to the quality, both in terms of the manufacturing process but also the designs — the most famous of which is the Convolvulus pattern of twisting vines, first registered in 1842. Other examples include Fern and Blackberry and Nasturtium, highly detailed floral patterns, recognisably Victorian in style.

The designs were first produced in wood, pressed into sand to make a mould, before molten iron was poured in. If you look closely at the back of an original Coalbrookdale bench, you’ll see that it is actually quite thin and beautifully crafted, says Thompson. So antique hunters beware: “The modern reproductions are a lot heavier than the original Coalbrookdales so it’s a bit of a myth when people say ‘that’s heavy, it must be a Victorian one’, because it’s actually the other way around.”

Thompson says that Queen Victoria purchased Coalbrookdale benches for Osborne, her home on the Isle of Wight. They were, and still are, expensive. To buy an original, says Thompson, will cost from £3,000 and could escalate to £12,000 depending on desirability, so it’s an investment piece. But they have stood the test of time and should continue to do so if looked after and restored when needed.

Of course, if your house and garden predates the Victorian era, an 18th-century bench might be more in keeping. Unlike the Coalbrookdale benches that were produced in a large foundry, these were made as one-offs, often by estate blacksmiths. They tend to be simpler in design than the later Victorian models, with little turned-out feet to stop them sinking into the earth. To find examples, try auctions or specialist antique garden furniture dealers such as Lichen Garden Antiques or Garden Art Plus.

French antique garden furniture is also highly sought after. Caryl Tincknell runs Violet Grey, which sources furniture from Europe from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including Arras pieces, hand-forged decorative furniture with distinctive claw or hoof feet. Much of it is found at déballages — huge antique fairs in the south of France. The company also specialises in unusual planters — it currently has an enormous, metre-wide copper pot for sale, used to make marmalade in the south of France circa 1900. It’s a striking piece with huge rivets — ideal for flowers or even for conversion into a water feature.

It is garden table sets, however, that have proven to be hugely successful for Violet Grey. Its approach is to find pieces — usually iron tables with marble tops, and then match them with sets of chairs from similar eras. Most pieces are grit blasted and powder coated (often in green) before being sold on to clients. It’s a less traditional process but Tincknell says it protects the pieces from the weather. Demand has been huge. “As soon as they [the table sets] go online they’ve been selling out. We can’t keep up with it.”

Most antique garden furniture does show its age through patina and imperfections, but if you would rather ensure that the end aesthetic is less shabby chic and more contemporary chic, architecture and interior design practice De Rosee Sa has just launched a new collection of restored garden pieces, with a sleek and modern finish.

The collection includes 1960s French wrought-iron foldable chairs, painted, restored and kitted out with square striped-linen seat pads, and a 1950s French garden set that the founder and director, Claire Sá, says has been “reimagined as a homage to the coastal furniture found in Positano patios”. It has a new paint job, a new marble top and vibrant orange linen seat cushions.

Sá says that there is “an appetite for a romantic and whimsical garden” and says that the new collection “aims to tap into a more environmentally conscious consumer who understands the importance of ‘buy once, buy well’.” Its careful paint choices and new upholstery, including stripes in different thicknesses, show just what can be done to make these older pieces appeal to a new generation of collectors.

The Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC), in collaboration with The Countrywide Wildlife Federation (NWF), has started its assessment of more than 100 North American household furniture merchants on their wood sourcing policies. In November of 2024, we will launch the Scorecard, which will gauge the calendar year-over-12 months development of just about every of the furnishings vendors assessed in the parts of coverage, policy implementation, and purpose-placing.

How to mix and match bedroom furniture

Among the trends that the design world is all too happy to declare dead, the matching bedroom set, or suite as it’s sometimes called, is right up there with flush-mount “boob” lights and popcorn ceilings. “Conceptually, it’s very dated,” San-Francisco-based interior designer Marea Clark says. “When every piece of furniture looks exactly the same, it feels a little lazy and makes for a boring environment.”

Many companies still make these matchy-matchy sets, but they are unlikely to grace the pages of today’s shelter magazines or designers’ social media feeds. Instead, designers favor mixing an array of furniture finishes and styles for a more eclectic, collected look.

It hasn’t always been that way: America’s taste for the bedroom suite soured only recently. According to Alexis Barr, a design history instructor at the New York School of Interior Design, the idea of having matching bedroom furniture took off during the industrial revolution of the mid-1800s and remained popular through the 20th century, thanks to a mix of savvy advertising, expanded credit lines and a rising middle class.

“There was an attitude that if you’ve made it and you have your life in order, you can afford to buy things that go together,” says James Farmer, an interior designer in Perry, Ga. “Now we think differently about these things.”

But achieving the artfully mismatched look requires balancing furnishings in varying styles and materials. Pick too many motley pieces and your boudoir might have the aesthetic appeal of a roadside junk shop. So how do you master the mix? Here are the guidelines designers swear by.

Whether you’ve just inherited a bedroom set or you bought one 20 years ago and aren’t ready to replace it, you can work with what you have to achieve a look with more personality. “If you already own a matching set, changing one significant thing can make a difference,” Farmer says. “It’s like buying a suit off the rack and adding a funky tie. That tweak is what makes it your own.”

The easiest and least expensive items to swap out from a traditional suite are the nightstands. Adding a pair of bedside tables in a different finish or style can energize even the fustiest outdated set. And if there’s a matching headboard, changing it to an upholstered one helps because it’s one fewer wood piece in the room. “An upholstered headboard is a great opportunity to bring in some color or pattern through the fabric,” Clark says. “Plus, they’re comfortable; it’s nice to have something soft to lean against in bed.”

When shopping for dressers, chests and nightstands, designers recommend mixing natural wood-tone finishes, which could include rattan and cane, with painted and metal ones to avoid the dreaded sea of all brown furniture. “If you have five different kinds of stained wood coexisting in your room, it can feel like a thrift store exploded,” designer Shannon Claire Smith of D.C.-based Shannon Claire Interiors says.

For instance, Smith advises against buying nightstands in a light wood finish and a dresser in a similar but different tone because it might look like you tried to coordinate them and fell short of the mark. “Instead, I would combine the light wood nightstands with a black painted dresser, or do a burl wood dresser with lacquer-painted nightstands in a color,” she says. “The possibilities are endless, just so long as the finishes are different enough to look like you did it on purpose.”

That’s not to say that you can’t have two different wood tones happening in the same space. When Charlotte-based designer Charlotte Lucas works with more than one wood finish, she too aims for contrast. “It’s easier to mix a darker wood tone, such as ebony, with a lighter burl wood piece because there’s enough variation for them to complement each other,” she says.

Consider scale and proportions

Smith says one of the trickiest proportions to get right is how the bed relates to the nightstands and vice versa. “Beds these days are awfully low profile and they don’t have box springs like they used to,” she says. “Platform beds can be a great look, but if you don’t pay attention to that scale, it can feel very low slung, making the other furniture in the room feel off.”

Ideally, you’ll want no more than two to four inches between the top of the mattress and the top of the nightstand.

“You don’t want to feel like you’re reaching up really high or down low to set something on the nightstand next to you,” Clark says.

The proportions get even more complicated when you have non-matching pieces on each side of the bed. Say you found the perfect antique desk and you’d like to use it as a bedside table. In that case, you should look for a nightstand, table or chest with a similar proportion and finish for the other side of the bed to unify the pieces. “The other rule of thumb is to make sure they are both the same height within an inch or two,” Lucas says. “If you have two radically different heights with identical lamps, it’s going to look really off-balance.”

If one bedside table is more than a couple of inches taller than the other, you can still make it work by choosing different lamps that hit at the same height. What’s on both sides of the bed should carry a similar visual weight and have the same overall height.

Even the most eclectic interiors need balance and harmony. Bringing in too many stylistically unrelated pieces of bedroom furniture can produce a disjointed and chaotic result — the opposite of restful. “Your room might start feeling kooky if every piece is in a different style from a different period,” Clark says. “Balance older, vintage or antique finds with newer pieces so it doesn’t feel like a flea-market hodgepodge.”

Designers agree the key is to pick one dominant style to anchor the room, then pepper that with a few contrasting pieces in other styles. For instance, in a room of mostly modern furniture, one or two over-the-top French or antique pieces can break up the monotony. “Similarly, if you have all traditional furniture with classic lines, throwing in one sculptural, mid-century item is a great way to make the room feel instantly cool,” Smith says. “Drawing that juxtaposition is key to making the space unique.”

Farmer adds: “There’s a gift that you’re giving yourself when you appoint your bedroom. It’s your space, so be unapologetic about expressing your style.”

Furniture getting last chance at SIRCH

People might know Dunlop from his days on the Studio Tour, when he was known as the Marquetryman.

As he works on the chest, he says he’s been in the Highlands since 1981.

“My wife’s more local than I am,” he says with a grin that shows laugh lines around his mouth and eyes. “I’d never get that kind of credential.”

SIRCH has hired Dunlop for a new pilot, ‘last chance project.’ Marketing manager, Laurie McCaig, said for the next few months, the warehouse will be accepting wooden furniture that would normally be turned away, and end up in the landfill.

“We’ll determine whether it’s worth it to improve it and sell it by repairing, restoring, refinishing, repurposing or upcycling,” McCaig said.

Dunlop tells the story of the chest. It came in with loose veneer on the top, as it had been water damaged. It was rejected at the receiving door. They called Dunlop over for a second opinion. He was hesitant, recognizing it would be a big job. However, he said staff challenged him, “and I decided to take on the project.”

He scraped the bad veneer off the lid, made the marquetry panel, sanded it, put a new finish on it. It took about three days, but the time was an anomaly.

“For the most part, the pieces I’ve been able to save have been under two hours of work,” he says.

He added he spends a great deal of time in conversation with people while he works, educating them on how, they too, can fix furniture destined for the landfill.

“We’re not only trying to rescue the furniture, but we’re trying to stimulate peoples’ imaginations, so they can now go into the thrift store, look at something that’s not quite ready for main street, and can imagine what they might be able to do with it. They can pick my brain and get some ideas on technique.”

Dunlop said he’s “loving it.” McCaig added Dunlop is the man for the job. “He has a fantastic reputation in the area. That friendly face gets it every time, but his wealth of knowledge of woodworking, with him having a studio tour booth for many years, he was just the perfect fit. We were happy to bring him onboard.”

McCaig said he’ll be there until October. “We’re just trying to divert as much as possible from landfill, and we’re trying to teach, that’s what we’re all about. Someone might see a piece like that and say ‘oh, I don’t know’ and just toss it. Instead of tossing it, either bring it here and donate it, help the community, or take on the project yourself, because maybe Kevin can give you an easy solution for a problem. That’s what the program is all about.”

Dunlop said the public is enjoying the program as well.

“Half the people already are quite interested. They’ve been talking about things they’ve brought back to life. I’ve been inviting them to bring before-and-after pictures. I’d like to put up a bulletin board with peoples’ projects. And, people are really picking my brain for techniques.”

He adds, “at this point in my life, it feels good. In my career as a furniture maker, I’ve been responsible for cutting down some trees, now it feels kinda’ good to be making sure that the one’s with good bones are not going to the dump. For me, it’s a process. It’s been a nice headspace when I’m doing the work. Once it’s done, that’s just a byproduct.”

We heard some griping about poor calendar planning as many high-end exhibitors and attendees were in Milan for the Salone exhibition, and many sports enthusiasts were in Augusta for the Masters or wishing they were on their couch watching Scheffler’s impressive win.

“We spoke with hundreds of industry leaders and friends, and the challenges facing the industry currently cannot be understated. Many companies are grappling with fundamental business questions and direction. There are certainly some winners in this market - growing and with great margins. Strong players are powering forward investing in people, technology, channel diversification, and more. Weak companies are trying to figure out how to move into a better position to hold out for the return of robust customer demand.

“E-commerce: We heard of a massive influx of new Asian suppliers showing up on the e-com marketplaces, rendering legacy vendors competing with thousands of unknown companies at extremely low prices.

“Tariffs: The 2018 Trump tariffs are ancient history as most importers have shifted to Vietnam, India, or Cambodia. Canada is enjoying protection with their institution of motion upholstery tariffs. Will the USA take this step? Who would champion this effort? And now President Biden is suggesting more tariffs on China. Will this effect furniture?

“Mexico: We have seen several visible exits from Mexico, while others are doubling down south of the border. We continue to believe Mexico has a meaningful role to play in the industry.

Interior Designers: There is an impressive cohort of 75,000 women and men leading this growing channel, and furniture companies are working hard to access this group in a cost-effective way.

“Showrooms: We are still seeing a lot showroom movement. ANDMORE is working hard to create density in the under-utilized IHFC building. Right across the transportation terminal, Showplace remains the place to be. We heard many people wondering aloud ‘who will get the Klaussner showroom?!’ Prominently located on the N. Hamilton artery this will be an interesting one to watch. The new Palecek showroom is stunning. EJ Victor is moving to the N. Hamilton area and Stump is working on selling their destination 20,000 sf showroom on Lindsey Street.

“M&A: Lots of deals out there. Many distressed ones. Some fabulous companies for sale. PE funds are starting to eyeball our industry. Asians and European buyers were prevalent this market, as the USA market is better than their own domestic markets. We are excited about this next season of transactions.”

2. Living room

The living room furniture arrangement is just the beginning of the McGee & Co. selection featured in the home's main room. A white Wilhelmina Slipcover Sofa and a dark gray Hildegard Sofa frame the seating area, bringing a variety of sleek shapes to the space. Additional living room seating options, like the brand's beige velvet Byron Chair and sophisticated Scaletta Bench, offer room for the entire family.

'I designed the Scaletta Bench with a slip skirt of ivory striped linen. It was the perfect fit to bring a more traditional feel to my living room,' Shea writes in the blog post about the space.

The coffee table features two elegant Tottenham Taper Holders, more interior design books and, of course, fresh flowers. The light and airy space is the definition of Shea's modern charm style.

3. Dining room

Shea's dining room features expansive windows and ornate green wallpaper – a last-minute design decision that absolutely paid off. The Orville Extension Dining Table, a streamlined design with tapered corners, is surrounded by Sascha Slipcover Dining Chairs at the ends and organic, ornate chairs around the sides.

The whole space is pulled together with a Diamond Braided Jute Rug, adding visual interest and natural texture to the luxurious space. Above, a gold light fixture adds a modern touch.

4. Primary bedroom

The McGee main bedroom is packed full of McGee & Co. pieces, and Shea says the Walt Bed is 'one of the star pieces in the room.' The defining headboard in dark brown draws the eye, though Mays Table Lamps placed on Dana Nightstands on either side of the bed help to frame the space.

Layered lighting is the name of the game in any bedroom, and a Fontaine Offset Chandelier and Aldorno Floor Lamp ensure a sophisticated lighting scheme in this space. A Tali Burl Wood Dresser and Philippa Settee make appearances in the room as well, and artwork is tastefully spread throughout the space.

5. Upstairs nook

Within Shea's home, there's a small landing space at the top of the staircase, which she's decorated with style. 'The Clemence Chair in velvet became an instant favorite of mine, and paired perfectly with the Goodrich Table with wavy legs in this smaller space,' she writes.

The lush, textured chair accompanies a larger-than-live tapestry in gorgeous blues, greens and yellows, and throw pillows – including McGee & Co.'s Abbey Silk Fringe Pillow Cover – make the space snug and cozy.

6. Wren's bedroom

As part of the renovation, the kids' rooms got refreshes as well. In the first bedroom, Shea made sure to integrate her daughter Wren's favorite color: light blue. The color comes through with painted wood detailing, plus the gorgeous Roslin Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, which brings a grounded, cozy atmosphere to the space. The Northcott Bed provides a stunning focal point, and Chatmen Striped and Pennywood Pillow Covers add to the welcoming environment.

Extra seating makes an appearance here too, with an armchair and the Channel Ottoman, and comfortable bedding, from the Briony Gauze Quilt to the Inger Gauze Coverlet, is scattered throughout the space. This space is quaint yet playful, fitted with a desk nook and large set of drawers so the space can adapt and grow as time goes on. As for our personal favorite design accessory in Wren's room? The Shagreen Table Clock is a must-have.

7. Ivy's bedroom

Ivy's room makes full use of wallpaper's power, with Pimpernel Wallpaper bringing bold color and pattern to the adjoining bathroom. An impressive canopy bed fitted with a Ruffle White Linen Duvet Cover strikes just the right balance of childlike and considered. Plus, two Arie Ottomans at the foot of the bed provide extra room for story time. This room's mixture of pretty pinks and darker, moody tones is stunning.

'I chose the Mackenna Dresser in a rich inky blue color which added contrast from the pinks and whites in the rest of the room,' says Shea.
