Six spring, summer trends for home

Article content

Culinary décor, athletic aesthetics and romcom-inspired interiors that may move you to break out the tissue box as you binge-watch your favourite romantic comedies are among this spring and summer’s hottest trends, according to Etsy.

Let’s dive into the online marketplace’s home décor predictions, some of which just may transport you back to simpler times:

Trend No. 1: Chef’s kiss. As the culinary world becomes a dominant force in the cultural zeitgeist, shoppers are spicing things up with everything from foodie-inspired art and hosting gifts to clothing and accessories that reflect their favourite food or cocktail. Etsy predicts this “new iteration” of dopamine dressing and décor will heat up even more this year, complete with foodie-inspired art that it describes as a “feast for the eyes.”

Decorating tips: “My favourite way to incorporate this trend in the home is through food and cocktail themed art and printed napkins, tea towels and other textiles,” Etsy trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson says. “There are so many fun options on Etsy from sellers who illustrate, embroider or even screen-print these whimsical pieces that add a pop of personality to your kitchen or even a bar cart area.”

Trend No. 2: Western 2.0. Yee-haw. You can tip your cowboy hat to the music megastars who’ve been embracing the country genre and its aesthetics for this trend. The iconic Western look has evolved from rugged cowboy roots to incorporate elements like leather, suede and fringe with a touch of glam, Etsy reports.

Decorating tips: Western 2.0 is all about mixing classic, timeless elements like distressed leather furniture and denim accents with more modern and contemporary pieces so that your whole space doesn’t feel too rugged, Isom Johnson reports. “Some of my favourite ways to infuse western influences right now are through cow print textiles, vintage horseshoes and cowboy boot motifs, which are a very popular candle shape as of late.”

Trend No. 3: Sports-core. From classic retro jerseys and oversized rugby shirts to golf-themed posters and prints, athletic aesthetics are on trend, Etsy reports.

Decorating tips: “This summer is set to be filled with global games excitement and I love the idea of leaning into sporty aesthetics for summer entertaining. On Etsy, there are so many tennis and pickleball inspired table décor that make for a cute themed party. I also love incorporating backyard games like cornhole and ring toss, which you can even get personalized on Etsy.”

Trend No. 4: Garden girl. Flowers for spring may not be groundbreaking, Etsy admits, but this year shoppers are stopping to smell the roses and embracing their inner ‘garden girl’ by inviting nature’s beauty into their lives.

Decorating tips: “The ‘garden girl’ aesthetic is all about inviting nature’s beauty into your space through botanical motifs and natural, ruffled textiles that resemble blossoms. For the warmer months ahead, I’m all about pastel linen in the home: napkins, tablecloths, bedding and more,” says Isom Johnson. The self-described “dedicated plant mom” will refresh her indoor and outdoor planters with brightly-coloured ceramic and hand-painted flower pots.

Trend No. 5: Time-honoured textiles. Crochet, quilted and embroidered details are seeing a major revival in both home décor and fashion, underscoring a desire for quality pieces with a handmade touch, Etsy notes. .

Decorating tips: “Quilted and crocheted pieces are timeless and they represent a long tradition of craftsmanship,” Isom Johnson says. “Sourcing authentic vintage items is a fabulous way to honour the past and add character to your home and I’m also loving the new wave of contemporary stitchers on Etsy who are creating really interesting modern quilts that are equally as stunning when used as a bedspread or hung on a wall as art.”

Trend No. 6: Romcom interiors. The 1990s and early 2000s vibe that took over fashion is making its way into our living spaces, according to Etsy. Driven by a longing for a “simpler, pre-social media era,” shoppers are embracing a “cozy, approachable and timeless décor style reminiscent of classic romcoms.” Heavily-styled bookshelves are the new gallery walls, patterns and prints live in harmony, and homes that feel “alive and lived in” trump minimalist or perfectly curated spaces, it says.

Decorating tips: Isom Johnson is pleased to see shoppers moving away from feeling the need to have sleek, minimal picture-perfect homes and are craving something a little more real.

“This trend is all about layering, and creating a home that feels truly lived-in and a little nostalgic,” she says. “Vintage, antique and flea market finds are really the ticket to transforming your space into a home that brings you comfort, just like your favourite ‘90s romcom.”

Cozy reading rooms among 7 hottest home design trends of summer 2024

Along with weddings come wedding events - showers, bridal teas, bridesmaids' luncheons - and the desire to decorate beautifully without breaking the bank. (After all, there's plenty of money being spent on the wedding itself, for everyone involved.)

One good way to cut costs: DIY floral designs. Yes, really. It's as easy as looking around for beautiful vessels that you can turn into vases. Then just let your creativity run wild.

I gathered together four of the top trending decor items of the season, along with a floral designer, to put them to use as vases when they were not, well, being used. At the end of the day, a vessel is a vessel. For me, if it can hold water, it can hold flowers.

Design “fails” tend to pop up just as much as successful ones do, and I’ve noticed this a lot with these four trendiest items, all antique: oversized glass water jugs, julep cups (specifically Wedgewood), champagne buckets, and flower frogs.

Not wanting to banish these trending items to a cupboard, I endured two ill-fated trips to my grocer’s floral department before finally reaching out to my favorite florist, Marija Babic of La Fête in Houston, to ask, “What will actually work with these things?” Enthusiastically gathering these items together, I rushed to Babic for assistance.

Oversized glass water jug: For an oversized water jug, she selects bright yellow Blooming Forsythia, which brings a splash of vibrant color to any space. “This setup perfectly captures the essence of spring's lively renewal,” Babic says. “The contrast between the delicate, golden flowers and the simple elegance of the glass jug creates a stunning centerpiece that's both fresh and timelessly beautiful.”

Flower frogs: While beautiful, flower frogs can be problematic. The size constraints make choosing flowers more of a chore than a joy. No one wants to play roulette with stem sizes — but what is always guaranteed to fit the job?

“I picked pink Scabiosa and white Nigella (Love-in-a-Mist) to arrange in a simple crystal vase that holds just eight stems. These charming flowers, symbolizing love and delicate beauty, perfectly complement the vase, adding a touch of whimsy without stealing the spotlight from its artistic elegance,” Babic notes.

An all-too-often-made mistake is to always go with bloomed flowers. Greenery, seed pods and more delicate flowers are oftentimes overlooked, but clearly make a statement nonetheless.

Champagne bucket: “I chose to arrange Orange Buddleia Globosa, Nigella (Love-in-a-Mist), and Solomio Dianthus in a vintage silver champagne bucket to capture a whimsical French country vibe. These flowers bring a burst of vibrant color, delicate beauty, and timeless charm,” she says.

“While creating this arrangement, I imagined myself prepping for an intimate French countryside dinner, ready to host my dearest family and friends. It's like taking a joyful stroll through a blooming meadow, gathering flowers to create a centerpiece that's both casual and sophisticated that lets your creative imagination run wild.”

Julep cup: Being in Texas and not Kentucky, locals have little call for the use of a delicate julep cup. The beauty of these small treasures is that they can be very universal: nightstands, powder baths, anywhere a delicate arrangement will be appreciated, yet unintrusive.

“I chose pink Chrysanthemums, symbolizing joy and cheerfulness, and white Solomio Dianthus, representing pure love and grace, to place in a small Wedgwood cup,” the florist says. “These flowers add a lovely burst of color and elegance, making it easy to beautify any space.”

Who knows? Maybe arranging DIY bridal florals will lead to new passions and opportunities, as it did for Babic.

Babic is an oil and gas professional by trade. She says it was a "burning passion to create something extraordinary and turn dreams into reality with flowers" that led her to establish her own business, whose name, "La Fête," means "to celebrate" in French.

"It's not just about the flowers or the arrangements; it's about crafting delicate masterpieces that capture the heart of your most cherished moments," she says.

22 Home Design Trends That Are Mega-Popular For Reasons Many People Will Never Understand

Decorating a home is a double-edged sword; on one hand, you can furnish and customize exactly as you please, but on the other hand, aesthetics vary from person to person — and sooner or later, you're bound to invite someone in who just doesn't vibe with your personal tastes. Recently, we shared people's least favorite home design trends that are just about everywhere these days, and even more of you chimed in with your hot takes on how people decorate their spaces. These were the best ones.

1."Doorless bathrooms. Why would anyone build a doorless bathroom, much less in a bedroom? 'Why do I always have pink eye?' That's because poop and mold are on your pillows, Brittany. And don't forget, if you're a private pooper, you're gonna have to go somewhere else or ask your partner to leave the room. Who thinks of this stuff?!"

2."Exposed beams are beautiful and have been around for centuries — but you're not fooling me when you slap up some heinous, faux wood 'beam' on your ceiling for that rustic, modern farmhouse look. I recently saw a TikToker put up a faux wood beam made of foam, and I swear I nearly threw up."

3."Built-in appliances are definitely dumb. Unless there's an easy way to remove the appliance for repairs or replacement, building around it is asinine."

4."'Agreeable gray' everything. When we repainted our living room, we read about how agreeable grey is perfect, so we got a tester pot and painted a wall that was out of direct sunlight. It looked like wet cardboard. It also took four or five coats of primer to cover up. We now call all that class of colors 'grievous griege.'"

5."One trend I cannot stand is putting gigantic houses on itty bitty-sized lots. There will be little yard to speak of, but a 4,000-square-foot house that is fighting against their neighbors to the extent that you can look into your neighbor's windows — but have nowhere to be outside or throw a ball for your dog."

6."Doorless showers. Every time you use those awful doorless showers, the entire bathroom gets soaked."

7."Pillows, pillows, and more pillows! Big pillows, bright pillows, itsy-bitsy pillows. They look pretty when arranged perfectly on a bed. The problem is most of the time, they end up jumbled or thrown on a chair."

8."Huge master bedrooms and bathrooms that minimize the number of bedrooms (or rooms) possible. I'm not having a party in my bedroom, so yeah, it doesn't have to be so big."

9."Why do I see houses that are ALL built with the garages set as the FIRST in-your-face visual with new homes? Please, for the love of aesthetics, stop creating this atrocity!"

11."Two-tone kitchen cabinetry. The next owners will be thrilled to rip out that island that doesn’t match the rest of the kitchen — or even worse, the different colors on lower and upper cabinets."

12."Those huge bowl sinks set on top of vanities or counters. I call them above-ground sinks."

13."Free-standing bathtubs. They create about 30 square feet of nearly unreachable space that needs frequent cleaning."

14."No mud rooms or small entryways in favor of larger living spaces. Being in the Midwest, it can get wet and muddy as seasons change. I need a place to take off my winter gear and not track dirt into my main living spaces."

—Anonymous, Minnesota, 25

15."Kitchen sinks in a center island. Not everything goes in the dishwasher. So where do all the dirty items go until they get washed? And where do they air dry? Right on display in the center island. I also saw an island stove with a pot filler sticking straight up from the counter. What an eyesore!"

17."Pot fillers. How old is the water in those pipes that you're just about to put in your cooking? It's not like it gets used every day and the water is fresh."

19."I hate my fake balcony so much. Like, why?! They're just big, sliding glass doors to nowhere. I see them all over Arlington now!"

Spring design trends and decor ideas to refresh your home

Many are yearning to switch things up, recharge and reimagine living spaces to reflect the refreshing new season

Article content

Suddenly, it’s spring. Weird Canadian weather aside, many are yearning to switch things up a bit, recharge and reimagine living spaces to reflect the refreshing new season — perhaps with fresh coats of paint and bright new hues.

Everywhere you turn the deep, rich colours of winter have been replaced with soft delicate touches of pastels. Spring comes on so quickly; all those bulbs one planted last fall are starting to poke their heads through the still-cold earth, and there’s a strong desire to fling open windows and let in that delicious spring air in.

But, are we too late to make changes? Especially when one is on a tight budget? Your changes can be as simple as “painting your front door to make your whole home feel new again,” says Vasili Benja of Ontario-based GNB Contractors. “Change just one room to a brighter colour, switch up some wall artwork, even get new bathroom towels and suddenly not only will your home look amazing, but you’ll feel amazing, too.”

Well-known and respected Canadian name in the world of design, Glen Peloso, who has designed hundreds of gorgeous commercial and residential spaces around the world, says it’s never too late.

Peloso, whose expertise has been showcased on a variety of television programs, recommends we go to town.

“Except for (such) holidays as Christmas, Easter and Halloween, it’s never too late to make decor and seasonal changes,” said Peloso, in a recent interview. “These are often temperate related — that warmer weather lasts for several months — you’ve lots of time.“

What’s hot? “I love the pastel and ‘shots’ of colour that are popular for the spring.  If you are ever worried about what colours to use and at what kind of intensity, you just need to look at tulips for your guide,” says Peloso, “The colours vary in intensity from deep purple and rich reds to soft pastel greens, yellows, mauves etc. Use the colours that make you feel the happiest. I wouldn’t worry about adding intensity to suit your personality.”

Changes don’t have to be so drastic, or break the budget, adds Peloso. It can be as simple as switching up a pillow cover or hanging a floral spring wreath on your door.

It should be noted pink continues to trend, especially in the fashion and decor world. Just recently the famous Hubba Bubba gum (made by Mars) teamed up with Behr Paint Co., to create Hubba Bubba Pink by BEHR, a hue not only full of whimsical energy but, according to company officials, to embrace the “Dopamine Décor’ design movement, where colour is used to enhance mood and create joyful spaces.” (Available at Home Depot. )

“Accessories can change the look and feel dramatic without costing too much,” says Peloso, who recommends the following changes.

Products to consider

  • Toss cushions and light throw blankest — look for linen, cotton, raw silk, summer wools as a fabric choice (vs. velvets, faux furs, heavy wool knits or heavy wool plaids by contrast). We love Homebird, Simons, H&M and Etsy.  Look for unique pieces. As a tip to save money, you just need the cover the same dimension as the cushions you currently have — you can store covers more easily than the cushion fill as well.
  • Bed linens, duvet covers, bath towels  — lighten up the bed as the temperature goes up. “You don’t need a heavy duvet (and duvet covers) this time of year. The bath towels can also change to pastel colours or just to a simple white with coloured face clothes only.  I love to use Turkish towels in the warmer weather, plus they also make great shawls outdoors in the spring evenings,” says Peloso.
  • Maximalism trend — “Moving to a more layered look — maximalism vs the simple look of the past. Pattern looks with layered accessories; patterns that clash but have a common colour thread to tie together.  Eclectic looks of ‘vintage’ and travel finds.”
  • Pastel — Intense versions of the pastel colours we see every spring and summer are now more saturated and vibrant. Chintz fabrics and accessories, throws etc.  “The look is intense and eclectic so feel free to pull out the things from your past that you love. Those looking for a calming spa-like space may want to stick to more pastel colours with some life and softer fabrics like cotton and linen to help maintain a calm space.”
  • Wall paint/paper — “If you’re looking for a dramatic change, wall paint and wallpapers are a great way to make a huge change. Combine the colours to create interest, soft peaches or coral mixed with soft pastel greens,” says Peloso.
  • Clean your windows — “I know this seems silly but cleaning the window is a simple but great way to brighten the house. The point of spring-summer decor is to brighten things up,” says Peloso. “If new purchases are not in the budget, then do yourself the favour of hauling all that winter dirt off the windows.  You’ll be amazed at how much brighter the house will feel.”

Floating shelves create magical space in the home.

Stay on budget

We reached out to Amazon retail expert, Octavia Roufogalis of the Amazon Home Decor team, who suggested the following items that can switch up a room yet stay on budget.

  • Trend: Functional decor. The perfect accent for any décor style with functional purpose, these floating shelves are easily mounted to the walls and offer a clean, chic look to an otherwise bare wall. Perfect for areas of the home that require extra storage space, like the kitchen, these classically designed shelves are an affordable way to declutter your space in style.
  • Trend: Neutral and pastel tones. Neutral tones never go out of style and provide a subtle accent colour that works with nearly any aesthetic. Muted pastels are making a resurgence this year as well, and pair well with neutrals. The Casa Platino Luxury Bedding provides cloud-like warmth and comfort as a result of its tested microfiber filling blend. Available in a variety of neutral and muted pastel tones, it’s a great way to re-introduce spring colours to your bedroom as we approach warmer weather.
  • Trend: Florals. If you’re looking to embrace the ever-popular floral trend as we head into spring, consider dipping a toe into the aesthetic with this gorgeous, floral pattern vintage rug, for a subtle nod to this trend.
  • Trend: Marble Finishing. Avoid breaking the bank through a full kitchen or bath renovation and instead consider this easy-to-use, peel-and-stick backsplash to give your space a makeover. With on-trend marble finishing and deep-coloured veins of gold, these self-adhesive pieces have a natural, elegant appearance and realistic texture that add character.

Ideas include a wavy wall mirror functional accent piece that makes a space appear bigger to a beautiful washed organic cotton duvet cover that transforms a bedroom instantly to a cozy throw blanket that adds a splash of warmth. Want to let your creativity flow? Reach for a childhood favourite toy — LEGO. Not just for kids, but LEGO sets can artfully reimagine a living space with a burst of floral creativity and colour.

“Part of the beauty of LEGO building is that there is a set for everyone –—adults included,” says Genevieve Capa Cruz, senior marketing director, Adults at LEGO Group. “There are sets that connect to many adults’ interests including art and décor to nostalgic and modern cultural moments.”

LEGO kits make great decor ideas.

Cruz says there’s a  “variety of LEGO sets introduced over the years have been purposely designed to be displayed proudly in one’s space. The LEGO️ Art theme, for example, was launched in 2020 to attract adult consumers who are interested in creating their own decorative display or art-inspired masterpieces for their homes,” such as The Orchid.  Brick-built home décor is not limited to the artwork, adds Cruz, noting such examples as Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night, and the company’s botanical collection that can “brighten up any space with floral beauty.”

Sentiment is a very short-term indicator that is entirely technical. There is no information about the health of profitability of the underlying company in our sentiment score.

Expert Tips From Designers To Help Give Your Home A Refresh

I’m not a designer. I’m a contractor, but over the years, I have developed a newfound admiration for interior designers. We’ve also had a lot of fun with them on our shows —they brought a new fresh perspective to what we were doing. Not to mention they’ve kept us current with the most recent renovation and design trends. Even if I wasn’t on board with some of their ideas, I trusted them, and in the end, it worked out in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

I work with some great designers, and together, we have created some incredible spaces that are practical, functional and beautiful for our homeowners. Last year, we concentrated on updating some key spaces, including the home office, the laundry room, mud rooms, the kitchen island and pantries, along with highlighting unique architectural details to complete the spaces.

These key spaces remain in demand and will continue to be highlighted this year! Here are some renovation and design trends to consider in 2024.

Maximize Storage With A Pantry

A well-designed pantry can be a game changer. Why? Because everyone can do with more storage space. We are finding that pantries are a line item that homeowners want included in their wish lists. This is especially true for large or extended families living in one house or even in smaller homes where utilizing all useable space is essential.

With the cost of everything going up, locking in on quantity discounts is popular but you need somewhere to store the items. Having a pantry provides that extra space to store items. Adding more cabinets, pull-out drawers or rotating organizers for easy access will help keep things organized.

Storage is the name of the game and with the evolution of how to carve out kitchen space plans, pantries have been included in the square footage space of kitchens, says Bilha Kangethe of The Lifestyle Loft

For entertaining enthusiasts, built-in wine racks or appliance garages can free up valuable counter space. In smaller homes, maximize vertical space with floor-to-ceiling shelving and explore clever storage solutions like corner cabinets or hanging organizers.

Not to mention, pantries are no longer just for canned goods! According to the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s 2024 Kitchen Trends report, more homeowners are incorporating small appliance stations and coffee bars within their pantries. This multi-functional approach allows for better organization and streamlines workflow in the kitchen.

Pro Tip: Consider adding outlets for countertop appliances or installing a dedicated coffee bar complete with a sink and hidden storage for mugs and accessories. Remember, any electrical work must be done by a licensed electrical contractor.

Work From Home in Style: Multi-Functional Home Office Ideas

“Being able to use one space for more than one function has become more of a lifestyle for a lot of families instead of a “trend”, says Cynthia Soda, of Soda Pop Design Inc.

A home office can be a guest room, playroom or crafts room combination. The possibilities are endless. Also, multi-functional furniture is now available to accommodate any space. There is a lot of love given to multi-functional furniture pieces as well, like games tables or transformer tables that can start as a console table/desk and extend to seat a large dinner party, adds Cynthia. This is great for multi-functional rooms or smaller condos where you want to make your space as functional as possible.

We installed this beautiful bed with a hydraulic system from Kimmberly Capone’s furniture collection for one of our families to help maximize some of their storage space.

Another thing Kimm explained was the importance of purchasing sofas and chairs with high-density foam. The quality of foam used has a direct impact on the longevity of the piece of furniture. For example, there are three levels of foam quality:

  • Level 1 – the lowest grade is typically found in low-end quality furniture, and will last a couple of years before it starts to show signs of degradation, like showing “dips” where people have sat, and not “bouncing” back
  • Level 2 – is a mid-level grade that will last 4-5 years
  • Level 3 – is a high-density grade foam that will last 20 -25 years as you can “flip and turn” to prolong the life of the cushion

Home Gym Benefits & Design Ideas

The resurgence of home gyms over the past few years will continue as they’re convenient and quiet. There’s no commute, and it saves on membership fees. Plus, you can work out whenever you like or have time – no excuses.

I love mixing up my workouts and I think this gym we created for these homeowners is great because it provides so much flexibility for the entire family to enjoy this time together.

But it also goes beyond saving time and money. It allows you to tailor your workout routine to your specific needs and preferences. Whether you prefer high-intensity interval training or a more relaxed yoga session, a home gym provides a private space to focus on your well-being. To create a motivating environment, consider incorporating inspirational quotes, workout mirrors, or even a smart TV to stream fitness classes.

If you don’t have a lot of room in your home, consider maximizing your space with smart solutions. For example, installing a Murphy bed with a built-in pull-up bar or wall-mounted weight racks that fold flat when not in use. Utilize vertical space with shelves or cabinets to store equipment and free weights. Remember, even basic bodyweight exercises or resistance bands can make for a great workout, making a home gym accessible for any budget.

Additional Design Considerations

Like any room in your home, lighting is essential, so keep that in mind too.

Also, if the plan includes lots of heavy equipment, ensure your floor can handle the extra weight. However, for most equipment, you should be fine, but I always suggest a dense rubber mat overlay to protect the floor and your joints and to help absorb noise.

Laundry Room & Mudroom Must-Haves

Laundry rooms and mudrooms are no longer afterthoughts – they’re essential spaces for keeping your home organized and stylish. Whether you have dedicated rooms or a combined space here are some design tips to help you plan your space.

These rooms are essential for large families, dog lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Depending on the space available, these spaces can be separate, or a two-in-one is often used.

Laundry Rooms

Laundry rooms have come a long way from being a dark, dingy space in the basement. In today’s homes, laundry rooms can be stylish and are often now on the main floor of a house with some nice details, storage options and pops of colour – they have become practical spaces that you enjoy spending time in – and who doesn’t want to spend time in a nice space?

While this isn’t a huge space to work with we were able to add lots of storage for these homeowners with a floating shelf, a foldable drying rack, and a great wallpaper to make the space feel bigger.

Speaking of space, don’t let limited square footage hold back your reno! Popular 2024 trends like stackable washer and dryer units or space-saving wall-mounted appliances can maximize functionality in compact areas. Since homeowners are now more conscious of being energy-efficient, consider incorporating smart laundry systems that optimize water usage and detergent dispensing. For ultimate convenience, consider adding a folding drying rack that disappears when not in use.

Laundry rooms can still be in the basement, but access to natural light is also a huge thing for me, says Cynthia Soda, so if you don’t have a window or the ability to put in a sun-tunnel then the right kind of lighting in this type of working space is key,”. A layered lighting design is always ideal to make the space welcoming and functional.

I also love to include smart LED lighting whenever I can and using motion sensor lighting is a great choice. The light will turn on automatically when someone enters the laundry room and it will turn off when you leave with your hands full of laundry. And your lights will never be left on, so there will be no wasting energy.

Mudrooms

Mudrooms are just that – they can be small areas typically near an entrance where people can take off their outdoor clothing, messy shoes or boots, store equipment and even clean pets. It’s essential to ensure the space functions, even if it is small.

If you have the space consider adding a pet wash station in your mudroom this way you’re keeping the mess and dirt away from the rest of your home.

Embrace the 2024 trend of hall trees and decorative hooks to add personality and style.  Incorporate a stylish bench with built-in storage for throw blankets or extra shoes.  Remember to choose durable flooring whether it’s a non-slip tile, engineered hardwood or high-quality laminate. Consider a washable accent rug to trap dirt and debris before it tracks throughout the house.

However, a mudroom and laundry room can be combined. We recently did one that included a laundry wall unit with storage, a washer and dryer, and a pet washing station. Separated by an island, another area had a large hall tree for coats, shoes and storage, plus a powder room. This is an exception, but it was ideal for this large rural living family.

Eye-Catching Design Trends

How to Incorporate Decorative Arches

Several of our recent renovation projects have included architectural arch details. Some were existing, and some arches were added to enhance the space. Either way, they are becoming and will continue to be a popular detail, and most designers I work with agree.

Sherry Holmes helping to build a decorative arch connecting the office with the dining room and kitchen on Holmes Family Rescue.Sherry Holmes helping to build a decorative arch connecting the office with the dining room and kitchen on Holmes Family Rescue.

I helped build this decorative arch connecting the office with the dining room and kitchen on Holmes Family Rescue.

Soft edges and curves are in harmony with our desire to connect with nature and feel less rigid/contrived in our spaces, says Cynthia Soda, of Soda Pop Design Inc. One of the fundamental elements of design is creating balance in a space between straight lines and soft curved edges. Decorative arches are a great way to create a focal point in a room.

Biophilic Design: Bringing Nature Indoors

All the designers I’ve worked with love adding natural elements to the spaces they create, whether it’s a “live” or “living wall,” herb wall or a grouping of house plants.

A new thing that our designers have been adding, particularly in the basement renos is a moss wall which adds a punch of green. I like to call it a “grass wall”! But seriously, adding greenery to any room brings a visual connection with the outdoors.

Holmes Family Rescue Season 2 Live Moss ArtHolmes Family Rescue Season 2 Live Moss Art

While we were a bit worried at first about how it would look like, but this green moss art turned out great in this basement reno bringing a little bit of the outdoors indoors.

Other effective solutions are installing large expansive windows or even a seasonal sunroom. Using natural elements, such as wood or stone, or even specialized thematic wallpaper helps create warmth and texture in any room regardless of the style of the home.

Show Your Style: Adding Personal Touches to Your Renovation

As much as I love my designers, the homes we give back to the homeowners are “homes”, not showrooms so we always try to incorporate pieces that provide a personal touch and show off their personality. This can be achieved by incorporating custom art, family heirlooms, handcrafted items and eclectic pieces of furniture – these all help create connections to the homeowner and their home and focal points within the space.

We created a beautiful wall display and focal point in a recent episode (find the name of the homeowners), with Kimm’s direction, by using the homeowner’s beloved blue and white China plate collection. Otherwise, stuffed in a drawer or box, now can be enjoyed every day. The homeowner loved it!

We had so much fun creating this personal wall gallery using the homeowner’s china that was stored for years without being used.

Use Colour to Bring Boldness to a Room

Some of the interior designers I work with love colour, which I tend to shy away from. However, with a trained eye, a pop of colour can really enhance a room.

According to Bilha Kangethe “everything from warm earth tones like terracotta, olive green and chocolate browns, to deeper hues like chartreuse and buttery yellow tones will dominate”, offering simple elegance with comfort.

Floral wallpaper on Holmes Family Rescue.Floral wallpaper on Holmes Family Rescue.

We wanted to really make a statement in this room and this wallpaper was the perfect fit adding lots of colours to brighten up the space.

No matter what colours you like, pops of colour can be incorporated with paint, wallpaper, a wooden wall treatment or even pillows. Adding texture is another great way to enhance a space. Plus, there are so many different wallpaper “prints” available you can even mimic a stone wall at a fraction of the cost of a real stone wall.

There are countless possibilities to brighten and enhance a room and show your personality.

Pickleball And Neutral Walls: The Top 5 Home Design Trends For 2024

The verdict is in — the old way of doing business is over. Join us at Inman Connect New York Jan. 23-25, when together we’ll conquer today’s market challenges and prepare for tomorrow’s opportunities. Defy the market and bet big on your future.

Along with resolutions for personal and professional growth, the new year sparks inspiration for renewed spaces to go along with a new attitude. Many of 2023’s hottest home design trends will carry over into 2024; however, there will be a greater focus on creating rooms that create a warm, nostalgic feel — no surprise after such a cumbersome and unsettling year.

Here are the five design trends to keep an eye on in the upcoming year:

Neutrals are back

Pantone’s Color of the Year, Peach Fuzz | Credit: Pantone

The reign of the neutral home seemed to be over a few years ago as homeowners embraced boldly-hued kitchens, 1980s terrazzo flooring and wallpaper with striking, one-of-a-kind prints. However, the pendulum is swinging the other way for 2024, as evidenced by Pantone’s Color of the Year, Peach Fuzz — a soft vanilla shade with peachy-pink undertones.

Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman told TIME that Peach Fuzz is meant to evoke feelings of “internal tranquility” and “connection.”

“As we enter 2024, some of the things that have become especially apparent to us is the concept of lifestyle taking on new meaning,” she said. “We’ve been living in this time of turmoil in many aspects of our lives, and as a result of that, our need for nurturing, empathy and compassion continues to grow stronger as we imagine a more peaceful future.”

“We’ve been reminded that a vital part of living a good life and a full life is having the good health and the stamina and the strength to enjoy it,” she added. “In a world which often emphasizes productivity and external achievement, it’s important we recognize the need to foster our inner selves and find moments of respite, creativity and human connection.”

Glidden followed in Pantone’s footsteps with Limitless, a honey beige shade that gives homeowners “versatility to work with both new and existing decor.” Meanwhile, Behr, Valspar, Minwax, Benjamin Moore, and several other leading paint brands pushed out an array of muted greens and blues that are reminiscent of the great outdoors.

“It evokes a feeling of abundance and a plentiful environment whilst simultaneously providing a restful and secure feeling,” Graham & Brown Head of Design Maryanne Cartwright told House Beautiful“We see our homes as a haven, a place to spend time with family and friends, and this is the perfect hue to create a welcoming color palette.”

Go mod with paneled walls

Paneled walls are back in style with a modern, more luxurious twist. Unlike the 1970s when homeowners were obsessed with covering every square inch of their homes’ walls with glossy synthetic wood, 2024’s version of the trend focuses on thin, natural wood slats used for accent walls in the bedroom, living room or kitchen.

“They create such a warm environment inside a house,” Florida-based home designer Andrew Howard told Southern Living. “I know some of us have tired of them from hearing the word ‘shiplap’ on every design show, but it is a great look and it always has been. We don’t need to fight against it because we want to buck the trends of the shows!”

The key to pulling off this trend is choosing high-quality finished natural wood, which will stand the test of time with proper maintenance. Toronto-based panel manufacturer Andor Willow suggests homeowners use wood millwork for their slatted walls; however, it will cost a pretty penny at $30 to $80 per square foot. Homeowners can also choose prefinished wood slat walls with genuine wood veneers, which give a luxurious look for about half the price.

Windows: the bigger, the better

Credit: Canva Pro Photos

Homeowners are letting the sunshine in with expansive, floor-to-ceiling windows that maximize their space and their mental health.

“Physical surroundings have a profound effect on one’s mental health,” Seattle-based interior designer Anna Popov told Forbes“It can look amazing, be glamorous and cost a fortune, but how does it make you feel?”

She added, “It is common practice in our firm to evaluate every design early on against very simple criteria: Does this solution allow us to maximize the amount of natural light in the space? If the answer is no, we pretty much automatically drop the idea because there is a better solution out there.”

Although floor-to-ceiling windows will certainly brighten your space and your mood, they’re an expensive investment. Home improvement marketplace Angi said the average cost for floor-to-ceiling windows is between $700 to $5,000 per window, not including installation fees. The average installation fee for complex window projects — including floor-to-ceiling windows — is $600 per window. Homeowners may also need to pay for upgrades, such as tints ($7 to $100 per square foot), weatherstripping ($150 to $450) or laminating ($10 to $20 per square foot).

If floor-to-ceiling windows are outside the budget, then skylights ($900 to $2,500 per window) are another eye-catching option. Homeowners can also boost their home’s brightness with carefully placed mirrors that reflect natural sunlight from their existing windows.

Bend it like Beckham — sort of

The days of sleek, modern lines are gone. Instead, homeowners are embracing furniture and decor that mirrors the shapes seen in natural landscapes.

“The precision of being a perfect block is out. Biedermeier furniture, for instance—with its curves and warmth—is becoming more present, and gone are the days of ’80s-inspired glass and steel,” NYC-based luxury designer Neal Beckstedt told Elle Decor.

Beckstedt and several other designers fawned over scalloped details, rounded barstools, curved desks and chairs, and artisanal decor that eschews the need for perfection and embraces authenticity. NYC-based designer Alyssa Kapito said alpaca bouclé fabric is the perfect match for curved furniture, as it accentuates the push toward all things natural.

“It’s a classic and always adds a beautiful texture to a room — you don’t want to do an entire apartment in bouclé, but we’ll never get tired of it,” she said.

If a $5,000 Serpentine sofa or a $1,400 Bouclé CB2 armchair isn’t up your alley, design site Decorilla praised mirrors as an easy entry point to the ‘curved’ trend. Although full-length mirrors can easily cost four figures, a quick Google search provides plenty of high-style, low-cost options for less than $200.

“Mirrors with organic, irregular shapes or oversized dimensions are in vogue because they can drive a bold statement in any room,” Decorilla‘s year-end round-up read. “These mirrors add depth, intrigue and a touch of glamour, making spaces feel larger and more inviting. Plus, it’s one of 2024 home décor trends that are the easiest to include in your interior.”

Get moving with your own Pickleball court

Credit: Canva Pro Photos

Pickleball is America’s fastest-growing sport, with the number of people playing pickleball growing 159 percent from 2020 to 2022, according to a CNN article published earlier this year. There are several restaurant chains dedicated to the sport, such as Chicken N Pickle, and cities across the nation are dishing out pickleball courts like hotcakes — Pickleball USA estimated at least 1,560 new pickleball complexes were built in 2022 alone.

Pickleball mania has extended to the luxury real estate sphere, with developers adding pickleball courts to their state-of-the-art wellness centers.

“In South Florida, celeb-favorite Reserve Padel is opening a facility giving residents at ONE Park Tower by Turnberry at SoLé Mia access to the community-centric sport, plus the development has private pickleball courts on the property for owners,” real estate development site Monocle shared with Inman. “The Standard Residence [in] Midtown Miami has an indoor pickleball court as part of its slate of amenities.”

They added, “On Billionaires’ Row in NYC, a project at 111 West 57th Street, also known as Steinway Tower, has an indoor padel [tennis] court on the 10th-floor wellness center — the building is perfectly centered on Central Park.”

The cost of building a standard pickleball court (20” x 44”) can cost at least $10,000, with costs ballooning to nearly $25,000 when you add in costs for proper fencing, lighting, weatherproofing and pickleball equipment.

Forget the rules with ‘personalized eclecticism’

Credit: Canva Pro Photos

Oddly enough, one of the biggest trends for 2024 is not following the trends at all. Dubbed ‘dopamine decor’ or ‘personalized eclecticism,’ designers are pushing homeowners (and renters!) to embrace their whims through furniture, decor and color palettes to create a unique, authentic space.

“I think in 2024 we are going to see more highly personalized spaces and rich color palettes,” designer Kerri Pilchik told Home Beautiful. “Interiors will be more eclectic as people use antiques and pieces that have been passed down from family alongside new pieces that range from bespoke to CB2.”

Architectural Digest is calling 2024 the “Year of Both/And” as designers and architects rebel against conventional rules in favor of floor plans that enable homeowners to use their homes in a free-flowing way.

“Everything is up for redesign,” LA–based designer and AD PRO Directory member Brigette Romanek told AD. “Rooms serve multiple purposes, walls are back, and feeling comfortable is important. I’ve worked on dining rooms becoming offices, offices becoming wellness rooms, bathtubs put on balconies.”

Although an open layout will always be a fan favorite, several designers said they’re seeing more people twist the design for their spaces, with some homeowners getting rid of their kitchen island or table and moving in a sofa for a unique, comforting dining experience.

“I see less and less desire for island dining, but that means we have to think carefully about the size and adjacency of daily dining spaces,” designer Victoria Sass said. “Sofas in kitchens are a fun new twist that we are proposing more often.”

9 Major Interior Design Trends to Watch in 2024

With 2024 fast approaching, it’s hard to grasp that we are almost a quarter of the way through the 21st century. And after spending the most recent few years in a tumultuous cycle of uncertainty, we’ve managed to regain a sense of normalcy due, in part, to the time and energy devoted to making our home environments a priority.

Now is the opportunity to reevaluate the decisions that were made to accommodate in-home offices or cozy nooks for cocooning, or to simply take your interior design to the next level. “A focus on previously underestimated areas of the home such as the hallway, pantry, utility room, and laundry room are coming center stage and enjoying a design uplift,” says Gemma Riberti, head of interiors at international trend forecasting agency WGSN. “Searches for ‘handmade’ and ‘eclectic interior design vintage’ are growing steadily on platforms such as Etsy or Pinterest,” she adds.

For more, we’ve spoken to a roster of ELLE DECOR A-List designers and industry experts from across the country to reveal some surprising—and not-so-surprising—home design trends set to unfold throughout the coming year (and beyond). From 1970—and 1870—period revivals to sinewy shapes and the appeal of handmade furnishings, here’s what we’ve uncovered.

High-Gloss Walls Are Out; Texture Is In

Plain white walls are still out, but so are slick, high-gloss finishes that can turn any room into a hall of mirrors. “I think lacquer had its 15 minutes, and seeing your reflection in dining room walls doesn’t interest anybody right now,” says Palm Beach–based interior designer Lori Deeds of Kemble Interiors. “Brushed or hand-applied finish is where it’s at, like Roman clay or limewash [with its sueded texture] or hand-tooled plaster, which I love doing.” According to the results of 1stDibs’s seventh annual trends survey, when 624 interior designers were asked to predict the most popular wall finishes, the highest percentage of designers also doubled down on limewash.

“People want some action to their surfaces,” adds Los Angeles designer Oliver Furth. “Straight painted sheetrock doesn’t feel exciting right now.” But it’s not all about paint or other applied finishes; there’s a lot to be said about clever manipulation of natural materials. “We’ve been thinking a lot about texture—not fabric texture but more like patterns in wood that are three-dimensional,” explains Kligerman Architecture & Design founding partner Tom Kligerman. “And patterns in stone—not just slabs, but [what can happen] when you cut it into a checkerboard pattern of four-inch blocks with half of them recessed and the other half projecting, so its surface has been manipulated into this wonderful geometric texture that changes when you introduce light into the picture.”

Brown (Yes, Brown) Will Be Your Next Statement Color

As ’90s neutrals were accurately predicted to replace drab gray tones in 2023, some of the same standout colors are poised to make an earthy splash this year. “We’re definitely seeing more and more brown in our lives—the Billy Baldwin variety of brown—and it’s a real throwback,” says Dallas-based interior designer Jean Liu.

When pinpointing next year’s hottest colors, 1stDibs determined that dark brown was in the top three, followed by shades of yellow and light brown. “There’s a color we’re using a lot in the studio that we’re calling ‘hot brown,’” adds Furth. “But browns are definitely happening—like really warm browns that might be a play on a 1970s palette, and those caramel colors, along with coral and persimmon.”

“Our eagle-eyed curators have spotted a major interest in these palette trends over the past few months,” adds Anna Brockway, the president and cofounder of Chairish. “They’re specifically on the rise among our most loved categories including upholstery, painted cabinetry, art, tabletop, jewelry, and decor.” For Danielle Barr, president of Woven, the New York–based rug design and development company, browns are “the new neutrals” and continue to resonate with their clientele. “We launched a lot of brown [rugs] in the past two years—chocolate browns and a variety of rust and deep golden wheat colors—that have a warmth to them because of the existing warmth to the natural wools themselves, so taking those colors on makes them feel even richer.”

“Brown is a great color—it’s very warm and rich, and it’s actually a great neutral to layer with other colors,” says New York interior designer Alyssa Kapito. “Everything was very gray, and now it’s much warmer—think sepia and caramel.” For designer Neal Beckstedt, the palette is a definite mood shifter. “Beige and brown are on an upswing along with very muddy colors that have an 18th-century calmness to them—think earthy colors with less vibrancy and more richness.”

In terms of popular materials, 1stDibs found that ceramic and terra-cotta earned a top spot with nearly a quarter of designers surveyed. “I was recently in Box Hill—Stanford White’s summer home—and his use of terra-cotta in the entrance hall is so beautiful,” says Kligerman. “I’d love to start using more of it in houses just for the sculptural opportunities, and I’m looking into different colors like the beautiful greens and cobalt blues and, of course, the natural shades of ocher.”

“I’m here for it,” agrees Furth. “Right now, I’m doing a bathroom in glazed terra-cotta tile that will feel like a beautiful Georgia O’Keefe–style hamam.” The clay-based glazed—or unglazed—material’s appeal can likely be attributed to its use across a wide range of design and architectural styles, from Italianate and Spanish to Art Deco and Arts and Crafts. “Antiqued terra-cotta makes for the most fabulous floor—especially in Palm Beach, where we have so much 1920s architecture,” adds Deeds. “As an alternative, clients are really loving the zellige tiles from Morocco that also work so beautifully in these homes.”

Bouclé Is Here to Stay...but with Fresh Updates

Since as far back in furniture design history as 1948, when architect and designer Eero Saarinen upholstered his iconic Womb chair in bouclé, the nubby-textured fabric has proven its staying power. And whether it pops up on a Pierre Yovanovitch Papa Bear armchair or is worn as armor in the form of an iconic Chanel suit, bouclé exudes a certain opulence. For San Francisco–based interior designer Nicole Hollis, it’s the one fabric that is the epitome of quiet luxury. “I’m always attracted to bouclé, and Rosemary Hallgarten’s alpaca bouclé fabrics are just gorgeous.”

“You don’t want to do an entire apartment in bouclé, but we’ll never get tired of it.”

“A very stylish friend from New York texted me the other day asking if there was ‘any furniture in 2023 that was not covered in bouclé?’” laughs Furth. “It is here to say, though we’re seeing new versions of it with thicker pile and in different colors—the skimpy cream and off-white bouclés feel down-market.” And where the fabric’s longevity is concerned, Kapito is in full agreement. “It’s a classic and always adds a beautiful texture to a room—you don’t want to do an entire apartment in bouclé, but we’ll never get tired of it.”

    Curves, Meet Straight Lines

Reporting on the most iconic seating, 1stDibs named Hans Wegner’s Wishbone chairs and Vladimir Kagan’s Serpentine sofas among the most coveted by designers—both of which share one distinct attribute—curvaceousness. “I’m over the straight line—we’re all about some curves and softer shapes in the new year,” says Liu. “With furnishings, we see scalloped details are really part and parcel of pieces we’re specifying, and it could be in the frame of a mirror or an upholstery detail—we recently showed clients a set of found barstools that had an undulating wood-carved detail on the back that they really loved.”

“The precision of being a perfect block is out.”

“A [Jean] Royère Polar Bear sofa never gets old for me,” says Kapito. “The thing you need to remember about any trend is that you don’t want to commit to it everywhere, so if you have a curved desk and chairs, you want to make sure there are also [pieces with] straight lines in the room—it’s a mix and balance that makes a space interesting.” Not surprisingly, Deeds takes a similar stance, with regional design in mind. “The undulating curves like those found in [the work of] Royère are a regular theme in Palm Beach design, and the scallops you’re seeing in furniture design are really hot right now but also timeless.”

“I see so many curves, and they’re not going away,” adds Hollis. “Artisans are embracing that curvature and more organic forms.” For Beckstedt, the path ahead is decidedly more roundabout. “The precision of being a perfect block is out. Biedermeier furniture, for instance—with its curves and warmth—is becoming more present, and gone are the days of ’80s-inspired glass and steel.”

    Artisanal Everything Is In

There’s an art to creating exceptional design, and it’s never more evident than in bespoke pieces and artisanal work that showcase the incomparable skill of human hands. “We’re not sick of seeing the artist’s hand and the human touch [in design], especially post-pandemic,” says Furth. “Our clients are craving the handmade—whether it’s ceramic tile or hand-carved wood furniture or handblown glass, human irregularity is soothing.”

Tapping artists to expand their craft for one-of-a-kind, hand-tooled pieces is something Hollis does on a regular basis. “[British artist] Nic Webb carves these gorgeous vessels out of solid wood, and we asked if he could turn one of them into a light fixture [for a project],” she explains. “And it really made a statement.”

In its own trend forecast, Chairish identified an increased demand for imperfectly perfect design that included American folk art and elements like whip stitching. “Handmade, heirloom, antique, or vintage items were made with consideration and care,” adds Brockway about a world where anything can be mass-produced. “There’s something incredibly unique and just plain fun about the way their details come to life.”

New York and Palm Beach–based designer Victoria Hagan applauds the character in these small details as well. “I’ve also placed a new emphasis on natural materials, including a celebration of their imperfections,” she adds. “We’ve all certainly learned that life is not always perfect.” As Barr explains: “Everything we make is by hand, and one of the things we do intentionally is mix materials in a way I don’t think our weavers have seen before. We don’t like things to be flat and perfect, which makes you see more abrash, or the natural variations [in the rugs].”

High-Tech Lighting Will Be Our Decorating Bestie

a light colored monochrome kitchen has a wall of cabinets and an island with a sink and a counter with vases and a bowl of oranges, hallways on either side of the island, a large square skylight, and limestone floors

Developing the ability to change the intensity and color of the light in a space was truly a bright idea, and over the past decade the technology has become more and more desirable. “People are embracing the technology that allows for color tuning,” says Liu. “It can make a room feel like it’s getting natural daylight even if it’s gloomy outside, but it’s not inexpensive.” She also notes the very practical purpose it serves for some of her clients. “For art collectors, it really elevates the way they’re interacting with the works in their home.”

Companies like Philips, AiSPiRE, and USAI Lighting have long offered an array of products to enhance interior LED lighting, and now designers and homeowners alike are beginning to see the light. “Though [the ability to tune] color temperature is a big thing—some clients love it, and some don’t,” admits Hollis. “We’ve been using Kreta, and each light bulb is programmable and you can warm it and change the color temperature—it’s a little more expensive [than traditional lighting], but you have the capability to control it all through an app.”

Alternative Materials Will Be the Standard

Sustainability has transcended trendiness to become a wider goal for the design industry in an effort to significantly reduce negative environmental impacts, while also enhancing the well-being and spaces of those who embrace it. “We’re seeing a lot of attention being paid to materiality—what it is, where it comes from, and where it’s sourced,” says Hollis. “And that means people are creating furnishings and products that are more interesting based on those parameters, like Max Lamb’s furniture collection made from recycled cardboard.”

In an ongoing effort to “reshape the rug industry” and minimize its impact on the environment, Woven is constantly pushing the envelope when it comes to production of its bespoke floor coverings. “We’ve mixed aloe [fibers] in with wool, and now we’re working with eucalyptus silk—which is another sustainable product—and mixing it with natural wools to create more depth and texture in our rugs,” explains Barr.

Victorian-Era Details Will Have a Revival

    danielle colding elle decor

Ornate moldings and a moody palette are all part of an upcoming mania for all-things Victorian, as this sophisticated living room by Danielle Colding demonstrates.
    Kelly Marshall

Whether or not we have to thank television series like Julian Fellowes’s HBO period drama The Gilded Age—and its predecessors Belgravia and Downton Abbey—for the renewed interest in the aesthetics of 19th-century design is beside the point, because we’ve moved straight into embracing it. “We recently completed a home with walls comprised of different pieces of oak, reminiscent in a way of Victorian architecture with its beaded board and square and diamond shapes, so there’s this great interior texture—especially when the light crosses the surface,” shares Kligerman. Though he’s quick to add the era’s heavy design shouldn’t be translated too literally. “You eliminate some of the fussy, flowery details and make it more abstract, more rectilinear—or even geometric—and remove the Gothic tendencies so it’s cleaner.”

“To that point, clients have been coming to me with images of that [late 19th-century] Parisian style—crown moldings and chevron floors—so there’s definitely a revival happening,” adds Hollis. “There’s also more modern millwork in conjunction with those moldings and things [as a balance], but it’s certainly a more ornate style.”

Still, one has to wonder, Are these late 1800s design elements really making a comeback? “Absolutely! And we can’t forget fashion’s influence either,” says Brockway about the rise in Victorian-inspired flourishes. “We consider it a nod to maximalism and a reminder to layer these elements into your home through furniture, art, and decor for the ultimate one-of-a-kind look.”

What are Alberta’s top new home design and decor trends?

xx

Article content

At the start of 2023, predictions for home design and interior decor trends included creating natural and healthy spaces that maximized natural light with an emphasis on using sustainable, greener materials that included recycled, upcycled, ethical and organic surfaces.

Now, halfway through the year, we asked Alberta designers — in both Calgary and Edmonton — what have become the most popular home design and interior decor trends with Alberta home buyers?

Article content

Their replies revealed that there are home design styles common among builders, including classic, modern, farmhouse, contemporary to modern heritage home designs, which tends to make it appear that Albertans have a vast palette for home design styles.

Maybe this vast palette is because “the internet is impacting consumer choices and driving trends based on what they’re seeing on the TV, the internet, HGTV, Pinterest, and in HomeSense,” says Katie Sutherland, interior design manager at Daytona Homes.

Sutherland adds that Daytona Homes — in Calgary and Edmonton — is seeing an interest in home designs that are modern farmhouse and modern classic in design.

Erin Davis, director of sales and marketing at Pacesetter Homes, a Qualico Company, said that the company has nearly 30 show homes around the greater Edmonton area. Each one is professionally designed and showcases a variety of design styles.

“You can see mid-century modern inspired homes, French country, modern, farmhouse, industrial and nearly everything in between,” says Davis.

Homes by Avi’s customers in both Calgary and Edmonton are interested in the blend of old and new.

“The mainstream consumer trend right now looks like modern heritage designs, which really incorporates the small details like wood working, natural finishes on wood. The style is in the little finishes with a more modern palette and finishes,” says Julie Punter, manager of showhome selections and presentations at Homes by Avi.

Transitional style is catching eyes at show homes by Sterling Homes, a Qualico Company, in Calgary.

“Our floor plans reflect an open space trend with a touch of the transitional style, a blend between modern and traditional, as we’d like the customer to envision themselves living there in the home,” says Pamela Burns, director of sales and marketing. “Right now, there seems to be a real interest from consumers for open-to-above floor plans, which creates a grand foyer or great room space. And while it might sacrifice overall square footage it provides that grandeur that some consumers in Calgary are looking for.”

“People today are being more cognizant about what they are picking (for their home), and thinking about their lifestyles, and being more vigilant about what they are choosing and why,” says Punter.

Albertans also apparently have a vast palette for interior decorating styles.

Designers from both markets shared that Albertans interior decor trends range from modern traditional, classic, contemporary, modern, farmhouse, Scandinavian, West Coast and urban decor styles.

Punter, from Homes by Avi, observes that Edmontonians appear to like homes with a warmer look and feel — farmhouse rustic yet modern — with a warm, cozy and inviting feel. Calgarians appreciate the same warm look and feel but like to apply more of a contemporary and modern look to their decor styles.

Personalized decor works best on a solid home design, says Davis.

“We design our homes with functionality at the forefront and in such a way that clients have lots of opportunity to express their unique design style,” she says.

Burns, from Sterling Homes, says they are seeing interior decorating trends with soft lines and rounded furniture, which creates a look of effortless elegance, including wall detail accents.

“(The accents are) usually painted a feature colour, adding dimension, and a pop-up wall feature,” says Burns.

Daytona Homes has also seen an increase in feature wall trends.

“These wood wall features have been very popular as they add texture and character to the room, with out being too bold,” says Sutherland.

Gone are the days when one design style seems to trump all others.

“Just like current fashion trends are celebrating style from each decade, we are seeing a wide range of design styles being incorporated into our client homes,” says Davis. “I think the reason there isn’t one definitive design style right now but rather so many are being seen is because the home is a way to express yourself, a place to feel comfortable and at ease. A lesson that we all learned over the past few years while spending more time at home,” says Davis.

Today, both home design and interior decor are reflections of who we are, our values, lifestyle, needs and ultimately the mood and environment we’d like to create in our personal space, our homes.

13 Home Design Trends People Are Tired Of Seeing In 2023

13 Home Design Trends People Are Tired Of Seeing In 2023

People have wildly different opinions when it comes to the way they design and decorate their homes — which is why I love polling you, our readers, about your home design preferences. Recently, I wrote a list featuring the "most divisive" home design trends, according to readers...aka the ones that y'all were entirely split over. Now, it's time to explore the ones that most folks just can't get behind.

1.

The first trend that people seem to no longer be loving: open shelving in the kitchen. And I can understand why! Sometimes, it's just easier to shut your things in a closed cabinet without paying attention to what they look like. Out of sight, out of mind.

2.

People also seem to be pretty over "millennial pink," I guess. (Now, we have to watch out for Gen Z yellow, apparently.)

3.

Considering the fact that they're basically death traps, the public's disapproval of floating staircases does not surprise me.

4.

And while we're talking about floating staircases being out, so are spiral ones.

5.

Also out? All-white kitchens.

6.

Gold hardware is making a bit of a comeback these days, but it seems like many people aren't entirely sold.

7.

And listen, though only 19% of readers love sliding barn doors, a decent amount of folks say it depends on the context. What I mean by that is...don't use them for a bathroom door.

8.

Concrete flooring? It's a no for most.

9.

Depending on your aesthetic, this one might sting. Lots of anti-cottagecore people out there!

10.

As far as mid-century modern chandeliers go, they're certainly not a guaranteed hit.

11.

Apparently, granite countertops are pretty controversial!

12.

And many folks reaaaaaally can't get behind linear mosaic tile.

13.

Last — and very much least, actually — "word signs." You know the ones.

Which home design trends are you tired of seeing over and over again? Let us know in the comments below.

New home design trends 2023

Warmer colour schemes, evolution of the home office and main-floor suites are some of what builders see growing demand in the coming year.

Article content

Goodbye grey, hello warmer tones.

Article content

As we enter 2023, Edmonton’s newest homes are no longer going grey. They’re also taking on a bit of a bolder look. Meanwhile, the pandemic continues to reshape what homebuyers are looking for in a new build. Although, there’s one key difference this year: affordability.

Article content

Starting with a home’s mood setting backdrop — its walls and colour schemes — expect to see warm, mid-tone neutrals for main wall paint selections while secondary dark jewel tones or chocolate browns will accent, said Amanda Dorval, Homes by Avi’s definitions manager, who added that dramatic, bold prints for wallpapers will also be prevalent.

“Design trends are shifting to warmer tones away from the greys of the past decade,” said Dorval. “Homebuyers are choosing darker countertops paired with darker natural wood cabinetry combined with an art deco vibe with gold or black hardware accents. These are still strong players carrying over from 2022, however, in a more transitional or traditional style as opposed to the clean lines we’ve seen in the past.”

She also expects white kitchens will still be predominant for 2023 but off-whites or creamy whites will be highlighted rather than the stark, crisper whites of 2022. “But black cabinets, paired with warm wood, are trending and pops of colour in the tile or countertops or cabinets accents will create interest and warmth,” she said.

Similarly, Jayman Built, notes that things are lightening up. Colour-wise, colours are warming up, said Janice Robertson, Jayman’s interior design manager.

“They’re moving away from the greys into beiges, golds and browns,” said Robertson, pointing out it’s a departure from the cooler greige/grey tones of the past.

Further, warm metals — gold and bronze, as well as black — continue to be popular for faucets, lighting, mirror frames and door and cabinet hardware, said Robertson.

Pandemic Influences Remain

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are still changing the ways buyers want new homes to be built. But of the three builders Postmedia interviewed, each had a slightly different take.

“Yes, I do anticipate there will be a lot of thought put in to dedicated spaces for personal lifestyles,” said Dorval. “Having floor plans with flex-room model options that allow for main floor bedrooms for multi-generational families, studies for home offices, prayer rooms, etc. are all requests that we have had post-pandemic and will continue to see this year.”

At Jayman, they’re hearing that the home office is more intentional — not just the spare bedroom — as a result of more people working from home.

Article content

On the other hand, there’s this from Pacesetter Homes.

“Work from home spaces are starting to see a change in perspective as people don’t necessarily need an entire designated room and are moving towards incorporating their work from home space as a part of another room, optimizing their overall space,” said Erin Davis, Pacesetter’s director, sales and marketing.

“The trends we saw during COVID, such as having a home office, are now focused more on affordability,” added Davis. “The home’s function is paramount, having the flexibility to meet a multitude of different lifestyles, all while remaining affordable. Homebuyers still want options like a home office, home gym, an upgraded kitchen or a basement suite but they want it in a package that is more affordable. Often that means in a smaller square footage.”

In Demand

Expect to see more legal suites, main-floor suites and spice kitchens in Edmonton’s 2023 homes.

“Spice kitchens are a huge trend for 2023,” said Davis. “Due to the demographic diversity that we’re seeing in Edmonton, people want to keep the dirty dishes and cooking smells out of their kitchens and kept in the spice kitchen so that the main kitchen can be more of a showcase. We are also seeing more desire for things like beverage fridges and bars in the kitchen and dining areas for entertainment purposes.”

Meanwhile, a main-floor suite — a bedroom and a full bathroom on the main floor — allows for multi-generational living, said Davis, pointing out that legal suites are also becoming more popular as not only can they provide an affordability option by generating income but they also align with multi-generational living and let an older family
member live close by as they age.

Both Jayman and Homes by Avi state that secondary suites have become very popular, with Avi’s Dorval expecting them to continue to be in high demand through 2023.

Three 2023 Things

Homes by Avi: Foresees an increased market for the connected home: smart lights, smart thermostats, doorbell cameras and more.

Jayman Built: Reports that curves are in with archways making a comeback. Hard lines are giving way to softer curved lines, also seen in furniture and decor.

Pacesetter Homes: Notes that there’s a great desire for an extra upstairs loft space that’s flexible for multiple uses.

Forget about playing it safe: 2023 is all about going bold with brighter hues. Hong Kong-based interior designer Iman El Zeky recommends giving colour blocking a try: it’s essentially about using contrasting but complementary colours to set a mood. “Using blocks of colours on walls or surfaces is a fabulous way to bring energy to a space.”

El Zeky suggests using your favourite hue as the main colour, then selecting shades that contrast yet harmonise with that primary shade. “The complementary colours can be introduced to the interiors in the form of painted walls, or in less obvious ways such as with a decorative rug, a cushion or a throw. You can really transform a space by painting your ceiling as part of a colour block concept,” she says.

6 Dwelling Layout Trends to Section Out in 2023

Examining Time: 4 minuteshome design trends, 6 Home Design Trends to Phase Out in 2023home design trends, 6 Home Design Trends to Phase Out in 2023

If a homeowner’s dwelling house doesn’t look very proper, it’s time for them to say goodbye to out-of-date house layout tendencies and rethink how they adorn. What can make a residence feel like household? What fashionable house structure developments can individuals integrate without having sacrificing particular fashion? Prior to keen Do it yourself-ers get started ripping off wallpaper, right here are some things they really should look at.

Decorating Models Throughout Record

The notion of attractiveness is one of a kind to each culture and time time period. Here are some distinguished dwelling design traits from ages previous:

  • Historical Egyptians adorned their homes with animal skins, textiles, sculptures, painted urns and murals.
  • Romans favored wood, marble, bronze or stone home furniture, with cushions and tapestries included for convenience. Mosaic tile flooring, shrines to various gods, frescoes and wall paintings reigned supreme in Roman residences.
  • Medieval Europeans favored dim wooden paneling, stone slab flooring and minimalist home furniture. Even tapestries and stonework were neutral in color.
  • 15th- and 16th-century French architects embraced their inventive, inventive facet. They most popular inlaid woodwork, brilliant marble flooring, finely crafted household furniture and paintings.

It is challenging to choose what counts as outdated residence style and design trends mainly because models are usually altering. One thing’s for selected: Whatsoever designers consider lovely will glimpse quite various 100 several years from now.

Dwelling Structure Developments to Consider in 2023

Property design developments come and go, but there are a couple issues persons can do to make a house feel timeless.

Out: Cheaply Built Pieces

Ahead of splurging on a invest in-a single-get-one-free of charge deal, owners should really take into account why individuals plush rugs are so low cost in the initially location. Are they device washable? Will they tumble apart underneath muddy boots or a couple of rowdy video games of fetch with the dog? Maybe they’re low-cost mainly because the individuals who produced them never gain a fair wage. It is vital to scrutinize something that seems also fantastic to be accurate.

In: Lengthy-Long lasting Decor

When coming up with a dwelling house, opting for a handful of significant-quality items that will stand the exam of time is smart. As residence design and style traits wax and wane, it’s effortless to repaint tables or toss a couch cover over the couch to fit altering tastes. Changing household furniture due to the fact it crumbles at the slightest contact can include up economically over the years.

Out: Meaningless Litter

If there is a single design that takes center stage in 2023, it is minimalism. This doesn’t necessarily mean residing in a sterile white box with modern day art on the partitions — despite the fact that some individuals like that strategy. Even so, filling a house flooring-to-ceiling with decor is an out-of-date house structure trend that really should be retired since it will make a living space harder to thoroughly clean and go about in. Minimalism embraces the idea that considerably less is much more.

In: Individual Touches

Instead of acquiring a pile of soulless, mass-made decor at the nearest retail store, people today can incorporate just a few parts that truly speak to them. They can appear for paintings that remind them of a beloved getaway, or incorporate their grandma’s toss pillow to the sofa simply because it can make them feel peaceful and nostalgic. Family members heirlooms may not have common stylistic charm, but a house is not a Pinterest-encouraged showroom — it is a selection of recollections.

Out: Trying to keep up With the Joneses

People from time to time make stylistic selections primarily based on what they consider other, much more thriving men and women are performing. This actions typically stems from the embarrassment of failing to maintain up with tendencies. For example, householders may increase a new kitchen area backsplash mainly because they browse that wood paneling is out-of-date, top to an impulse determination to renovate. Though there is nothing completely wrong with experiencing modern day designs, owners ought to only adjust their decor since it appeals to them on a personal stage.

In: Embracing the One of a kind

The odds are that in a number of many years, out-of-date property design developments individuals want to improve will be the next large issue in decorating. If a property owner enjoys their environmentally friendly carpet and sunken seating place, so does anyone else — just after all, a designer created individuals items on intent. Men and women really should determine characteristics that make their residences exclusive and spotlight them. Glass doorknobs and coffered ceilings can increase allure to a house.

Out: Plastic and Other Unsustainable Selections

People today ought to appear carefully at what materials they acquire when revamping their households. Polyester, nylon and acrylic are all plastic in disguise. It’s also greatest to stay clear of unsustainably harvested wood such as Brazilian mahogany, Burmese teak, wenge and merbau.

In: Eco-Pleasant Pieces

Choose wooden from trees like elm, tulip, black cherry, willow and comfortable maple to get prolonged-lasting home furniture with out sacrificing the rainforest. Individuals can also decide for bamboo home furnishings, upcycled pieces designed of recycled wood or relatives heirlooms. Metal is resilient and endlessly recyclable. Marble and pure stone making supplies are also long lasting, sustainable decisions.

Out: Investing Just to Spend

It can be tempting to redo the bathroom just after getting a get the job done bonus or tax refund, but resist the urge to spend all that difficult-earned dollars on new flooring. Homeowners should really take into account repurposing items they previously very own or basically redecorating. For illustration, a copper mug or flower vase will make a terrific toothbrush holder, and it’s straightforward to liven up a tired washroom with small far more than a fresh coat of paint.

In: Decorating With Intention

Homeowners ought to appear all over each individual home and make a decision what would rework it. A little something as uncomplicated as a new faucet, shower curtain or toilet tank topper can refresh a lavatory. A matching china set and reusable cleaning soap dispenser can pull a kitchen layout collectively. Occasionally, rearranging household furniture or incorporating a perfectly-placed mirror is more than enough to make a area look far more contemporary.

Out: Ditching Outdated Home furnishings

Is that kitchen area table definitely on its previous legs, or can a person breathe new daily life into it by sanding it and staining it a new shade? From time to time the only change involving out-of-date and present-day styles is coloration, and which is perfectly in just most people’s handle.

In: Replacing Points That Split

If something is truly damaged further than repair service, let it go. Correcting damaged furnishings should usually be the first choice, but if sitting on people wobbly kitchen area chairs feels like navigating a minefield, it is time for an up grade. Duct tape can only consider a person so far.

Retiring Out-of-date Home Design Traits

A person’s residing space should really be their own relaxing, cozy sanctuary. In 2023, the most outdated household design tendencies are overbuying, not thinking of sustainability and building purchases merely since an influencer proposed it. It’s time to embrace a new mentality regarding inside design and style: making the most of the distinctive, quirky character that can make a house really feel like a home.

Aged is new once again

The penchant for master craftsmanship is also driven by a need for person expression, Smecker claims. “Consumers are no longer intrigued in coordinated areas and matching furnishings sets. They favor to just incorporate exclusive pieces, heirlooms or thrifted finds that they adore into their spaces. There is empowerment in acquiring and possessing your private style, especially in interiors.”

Starmer claims the burgeoning interest in classic and reused home furnishings is a hopeful change. “This pattern is anticipated to rise and increase, as we see buying for 2nd lifestyle products as equally a design-savvy and environmental preference to make.”

Amid the most innovative illustrations she’s just lately noticed are vintage shop counters and haberdashery models as kitchen islands and antique French linen sheets dyed with bark and roots to build curtains and bed throws. “The confident dwelling designer is mixing up the models, vintage wooden home furnishings with recycled stone floor extra, or classic seating recovered in modern day printed materials,” she provides.

Biophilia reconfigured

The earlier couple several years noticed us clinging to as lots of interior greenery elements as probable, from botanical styles to assertion crops. Now, that enthusiasm nevertheless operates deep but is morphing into a thing unique.

“[Though] biophilia is continue to vital, this year’s traits are significantly less encouraged by lush mother nature but alternatively by the irregular and imperfect,” Smecker says. “This pattern [celebrates] desert landscapes, mineral shades, mossy greens, and uncooked, unfinished textures.”

It’s also given increase to an fascinating new substance palette. “Material designers are now communing instantly with the intelligence of mother nature,” Starmer claims. “Groundbreaking manufacturers are talking the language of the land, discussing biodiversity and insect populations, permaculture, and the harmonious integration of fiber, farming, and foodstuff. Fabrics are being developed from orange skins and rose stems, and we are performing in harmony with mycelium, clay, fungus, grape skin, dried peel, pineapple skin, brick, earth, shells, kelp, blood, pig pores and skin, and petals.”

It's possible we will not see it in 2023 but, probably, a person day our decor will be dictated by our compost bins.

A New York Interior Designer Shares 3 Hot and 2 Dated Home Trends

  • NYC interior designer Bennett Leifer outlined what's in and what's out right now.
  • Textured walls, hand-painted wallpaper, and bold headboards create subtle luxury that people want.
  • But the all-white look and overdressed windows have fallen out of favor.

People across New York City, the Hamptons, the Hudson Valley, and Connecticut  seeking whimsical yet sophisticated interiors call on Bennett Leifer.

Leifer, who founded his New York City-based interior design firm nearly a decade ago, has his finger on the pulse of the design whims and wants of his clients, and those waning in popularity.

He spoke with Insider about what his clients are seeking in their homes now, and the tired trends they're ready to leave behind.

In: Handmade and unexpected touches

The minimalist white box aesthetic that was so popular five years ago has given way to an appreciation for textures and techniques that embrace an Old World style of craftsmanship.

"I think people are wanting their spaces to feel rich and unique to them," Leifer said. "They don't necessarily want to add a bold print to the wall, they don't necessarily want to paint a wild color. But they do want to have this subtle luxury — we're calling it personal richness."

He's used hand-painted wallpaper that features imagery personal to his clients and handmade Italian tiles laid in a pattern to reflect the roof of an adjacent New York City building that can be seen through a window.

Lower-lift projects include adding Venetian plaster to walls rather than the standard paint job and adding velvet trim around the baseboard and door of a room to add in that "personal richness."

In: Statement-making headboards

Leifer has created bespoke, oversized headboards for two clients recently.

Bjorn Wallander

Leifer's clients are more interested in big, bold headboards than ever before.

He sees it as a response to the rise in catalog and online shopping and the pandemic's effect on the supply chain.

"There was this whole wave towards getting the look for less, but then I think people started seeing a lot of the same thing," he said, adding that supply-chain issues inflated the "emotional frustration" of decorating a home.

"That's where I personally think a lot of the interest in making these unique, personal moments came about," he said.

Leifer has crafted an oversized arched headboard that mirrored a shape featured in the room's wallpaper. The oversized headboard is an opportunity to be playful.

"You can bring levity into the design in a way that isn't like turning it into a kid's room," he said.

In: Functional pieces

A woman sits in an ergonomic chair in a home office.

Functional pieces, like ergonomic chairs, are winning out over just design-minded pieces.

In this era of the Instagram-perfect home, it's tempting to eschew functional furniture for something that's more aesthetically pleasing.

But Leifer said his clients are becoming more practical than that. Case in point: The ergonomic chair, which isn't really known for its good looks.

"I'm seeing more demand for things being what they should be and more conscious decisions in terms of health choices," he said. "For example, we're doing a study and we're buying the prettiest ergonomic chairs we can find, because it's important to have good back support. Whereas in the past, it may have been a club chair style on a swivel caster base."

Herman Miller's Aeron chair is the gold standard for ergonomic chairs, and is about as streamlined-looking as they come. They start around $1,200. Branch Furniture's less costly options start around $330.

Out: All-white everything

A kitchen with white paint, white cabinets, and white countertops.

Defaulting to white is out. Instead, Leifer said it's become a more intentional choice to use white.

Leifer said his clients aren't using white as a fallback anymore, but rather an intentional decision. It boils down to people, after spending a few years at home, really wanting to have a personalized space that speaks to their own aesthetic.

"If you're using it, it's an intentional decision," he said. While clients are still interested in white kitchen cabinetry and white bathrooms, for instance, it's because "they want it to feel crisp," and not just because it's an old standby.

Be gone tassels and reams of drapes: Simplicity and intention are the name of the game when it comes to dressing up windows now.

"It has to finish a space to a certain degree," Leifer said, but clients aren't falling back on the old rulebook.

Instead they're curious to experiment with new touches, like the project where Leifer's using bronze casings around windows. It's not dressing windows for the sake of dressing them — it's all about intention.
